Our mother was called by the Angels to her Heavenly home December 20, 2021. Waiting there for her were her parents George A. and Genevieve A. (Wineland) Barnd and her loving husband of 40 plus years, Roy B. Girdler.
She was born March 25, 1938, although according to her, she remained 17. She was spoiled her whole life by everyone who loved her, and that never changed.
When Selene was 14 years old, her father passed away and she had to start helping her mother run a 13-bed nursing home, Barney’s. After years of nursing, she told her mother she wanted to be a hairdresser. So, at the age of 25, she went to State Beauty Academy (first class in Findlay). Her mother bought Muerice’s Beauty Salon in 1963 and she worked there until 1967 when her brother moved her shop to her house on Bell Avenue (LaBella Curl) so she could be home with her four children and continue to work for a total of 51 years.
Mom was a very talented creative person. Her hobbies included baking, sewing, cross stitching, crocheting, and ceramics. She also enjoyed puzzles and card games with friends. Selene spent long hours doing hair and set dressing for Fort Findlay Playhouse, hair for Light Opera, and University of Findlay (where she is on the wall of fame).
Mom was very faith based, she attended First Assembly of God with her four children in tow. We were taught early on to believe God loved us and would take care of us. After her and Roy married, she helped him with his ministry, where at Pleasant Hill Community Church, she played the organ, taught Sunday school, and filled in as teacher on Wednesday night if Dad had to work. She held children’s Bible story time in our home, and always would share with her customers in the beauty shop. They supported Mission Possible in Haiti. Mom was always there to help those in need. We were very blessed to have mother all these years.
Left to cherish her memory are her children, Wanda Kleman, Donnita Krauss both of Findlay, Sam (Laurie) Girdler of Van Buren, Dean (Connie) Girdler of Findlay, and the granddaughter they raised, Christina (Marc) Friia; 13 grandchildren, and 17 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by sons, Devern (Mick) Girdler, and Doug Girdler; son-in-law, Robert (Bob) Krauss; two brothers and their wives, David (Donna) Barnd, and Daniel (Nancy) Barnd.
The family will be forever grateful for the devotion and constant care Donnita gave to our mother throughout her life. We would also like to thank the team at Fox Run and Bridge Hospice for her ed of life care.
Due to Covid, all services will be private. She will be laid to rest in Bechtel Cemetery, Van Buren. HUFFORD FAMILY FUNERAL HOME, 1500 Manor Hill Rd, Findlay (419-422-1500) has been entrusted with the arrangements.
