Charles E. Miller, 72, of Bluffton, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, July 10, 2024, surrounded by his loving family.
Charles was born on March 9, 1952, in Dennison, Ohio, to Charles and Joann (Ashleman) Miller. On November 28, 1981, he married Sigrid (Archinal), who survives him. Charles graduated from Indian Valley South High School in 1971 and served in the U.S. Army Reserves as an M.P. He dedicated 30 years of his career as the Director of the Board of Elections for Tuscarawas County, where his passion for encouraging civic participation through voting was deeply felt. He also served on the Board of the Ohio Association of Election Officials, including a term as President.
A lifelong member of the John Heckewelder Memorial Moravian Church in Gnadenhutten, Ohio, Charles had a profound love for history, particularly the history of the Moravian Church and Gnadenhutten. He was honored to receive the Tuscarawas County Historical Society's Zeisberger Heckewelder Award in 2012 for enhancing the understanding of local history. After moving to Bluffton, he continued to share his knowledge and passion for Gnadenhutten and Tuscarawas County with everyone he met. Charles enjoyed listening to Harry Chapin, beating everyone at trivia, watching classic television, and antiquing. He always cherished time with family and friends.
Charles is survived by his wife, Sigrid; children, Heidi (Matt) Wagner, Freman Yant, Kimberly (Randy) Spallinger, Martin (Ment) Yant, and Chris (Bethany) Miller; 13 grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents.
