Jerry McAdoo, 89, a fun loving, creative, story-telling Irishman died Sunday, Feb. 20, 2022, at his Findlay residence after a long illness.
Euchre was his game. Steelers were his team. Trivia was his superpower. He loved watching “Wheel of Fortune” and “Jeopardy,” playing games with the family, and rooting for any Pittsburgh sports team. He attended nearly every Memorial Day parade in Findlay insisting everyone wear red, white, and blue. He celebrated St. Patrick’s Day with gusto and marked the occasion by buying green carnations every year for his wife and daughters, and then daughters-in-law and granddaughters.
The only child of Jane (McGivern) and John C. McAdoo, Jerry was born on July 1 in Oakland, Pennsylvania, in the shadow of Pittsburgh’s Forbes Field, where he worked as a lad. He graduated from Burgettstown High School in 1950. He came to Findlay to attend college on a wrestling scholarship following a four-year stint in the Navy during the Korean War. In the Navy he wrestled and played rugby.
Through a college friend, he met Phyllis Fleck. In 1959, they were married on June 27, her parent’s wedding anniversary, a tradition carried on by their youngest daughter. He coached his children in youth soccer and softball. He participated in several bowling leagues, golf leagues, and card clubs throughout his life.
He retired from Cooper Tire Rubber Company in 1994, after a 35-year career as a supervisor. He was a member of St. Michael the Archangel Catholic Church, the Knights of Columbus Council 957, and the American Legion Ralph D. Cole Post 3.
He is survived by his wife; sons, Philip McAdoo, of Lima, and Jamie (Joan) McAdoo of Maumee; daughters, Kelly Taylor, of Bowling Green, and Maureen (Paul) Sorce of Mason; grandchildren, Meredith (Daniel) Daugherty and Kyle Taylor; Megan, Max and Macy McAdoo; Colleen, Patrick (Tyler Seybold) and Sean McAdoo; and Jack, Molly, Mckenzie, and Luke Sorce; and great-granddaughter, Avery Daugherty.
Left to remember his many jokes and stories are also his brothers-in-law Bump Fleck and Mike (Sue) Fleck; sister-in-law, Mary Fleck; a beloved aunt, Ruth McGivern; and many nieces and nephews.
A son, Patrick, died in infancy. He is predeceased by his son-in-law, Tom Taylor, and many in-laws in his wife's large family that he cherished.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Saturday, Feb. 26, at 11 a.m. at St. Michael the Archangel Catholic Church, 750 Bright Road, Findlay. All are welcome to visit prior to Mass in the Narthex from 9:30 to 11 a.m. Interment will immediately follow Mass at St. Michael Catholic Cemetery, where a military honors ceremony will be conducted and bagpipes will play “Danny Boy.”
In lieu of flowers, those wishing to make an expression of sympathy in Jerry’s name are encouraged to consider Cancer Patient Services, 1800 North Blanchard Street, Suite 120, Findlay, or St. Michael the Archangel Catholic Church.
