Marie J. Smith

September 18, 1936 — January 19, 2022

Findlay

Marie J. Smith, 85, of Findlay, passed away Wednesday, January 19, 2022, at Bridge Hospice Care Center. Marie was born September 18, 1936, to Herman and Martha (Niederkohr) Schreiner in Carey, Ohio. Her father, Herman, passed away in an accident when she was 1.5 years old and she was raised by her mom, Martha, and stepdad, Paul Krupp. In her youth, Marie worked for her parents’ small grocery store on Muncie Street in Carey and at Our Lady of Consolation Catholic Church. Her career goals were to be a wife and mother. Marie was able to achieve those goals when she met and later married the love of her life, James V. Smith on October 15, 1960, in Our Lady of Consolation Catholic Church. Jim preceded her in death, passing away on August 1, 2012. She and Jim were members of St. Michael’s Catholic Church, Findlay. Over the years, Marie worked at Seiberling Rubber, Co., Ohio Savings & Loan, New Riegel Schools, Lifetouch, and Fit Rite Shoppe.

Surviving are her children, Lynn (Tim) Granatir of Perrysburg, OH, Paul (DeAnn) Smith of Fostoria, Karen (Michael) Hopkinson of Walbridge, OH, Ronald (Wood) Foster-Smith of Minneapolis, MN, Michael (Pamela) Smith of Caledonia, IL, Andrew (Christina) Smith of Van Buren; grandchildren, Brian and Michelle Granatir, Taylor and Drew Smith, Ashley DeLeon, Josh and Tyler Hopkinson, Chantyl Outzen, Mykela Johnson, Jenna and Melayna Smith, and Zachary, Isaac, and Alexandria Smith; great-grandchildren, Camron Green, Liliana Granatir, Brand DeLeon, and Ehren and William Outzen; sister, Catherine Reinhart, Fostoria, OH; and her very special little puppy companion, Peanut. Maria was preceded in death by her husband; parents; stepdad; and brothers, Howard, Eugene, Wayne, David, Herman, and Melvin.

Marie’s children would like to thank her for leaving them with two special gifts: knowing the importance of family and keeping your sense of humor, even in your final days.

The family would also like to extend a very special thanks to Marie’s lifelong friends Rosie Boyce (Carey) and Donna Mae Daniel (Tiffin); “Aunt Kak”, for being a pillar of strength and comfort in her sister’s final days; the staff at The Heritage; Blanchard Valley Hospital’s ER department for the many visits over the last several years; and the staff at Bridge Hospice, Findlay; and Hufford Family Funeral Home.

A Catholic Mass, burial, and celebration of life will be held in the spring. Memorials in honor of Marie may be made to Bridge Hospice Care Center, Leukemia & Lymphoma Society, or St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital. HUFFORD FAMILY FUNERAL HOME, 1500 Manor Hill Rd, Findlay (419-422-1500) has been entrusted with the arrangements
