He served as Sergeant First Class in the MEDDAC Health Services Command and retired from the U.S. Army after 24 years. SFC Day was awarded the Purple Heart for combat in Korea, Army Commendation Medal for heroic acts in Vietnam, and many other awards during his military career.
Rich was born June 21, 1933, in Ripley, New York to Ralph and Bertha (Randall) Day who are deceased. He is survived by his former wife, Judith (Ferrall) Boyle and their children, Gary, Karla, and Karin; grandchildren, Jordan, Paige, Ian, Reese, and Emma; two great-grandchildren, Elias and Iris; sisters, Mildred Day and Lucille Lundquist; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by brothers, Ralph Jr., Kenneth, Francis “Bob,” Walter, and Donald; and sister, Dorothy Howard.
Aside from his family, Rich’s greatest devotion was to the military. After retiring from active duty, he continued to work in the medical field in Army hospitals as a LVN and eventually retired as a Respiratory Therapist.
Rich enjoyed weekly karaoke time at the VFW, AMVETS, and Moose Lodge with friends, football, yard work, and his nightly news. Rich’s best advice to all, “Don’t take any wooden nickels.”
